searching mail archives?

hi all, I know we've said that searching the archives has been covered, but 
could someone enlighten me on methods to do this? what if you don't know 
when a subject came up, for instance? When i find the list archives page 
from the mac visionaries site, you then have to select the month, then you 
can search.
