preventing VmWare Fusion from autostarting an OS

Folks, can't recall if I asked this question on this list so if I  
have, please forgive my asking the same question twice.
I have Fusion installed and I've got both Ubuntu 8.10 and windows xp  
installed. For some crazy reason when I start Fusion, Ubuntu  
automatically loads. I don't want this behavior and I surely checked  
nothing when I setup Ubuntu that would indicate this was the desired  
behavior. I can't locate any option that would allow me to stop this  
behavior. If anyone has any thoughts, I'd appreciate it. Also, while  
I'm asking, I also had some problem with Ubuntu where I now hear a  
click in the headphones, but the speech server seems to be broken  
suddenly. Now I considered just trashing the thing and starting over,  
but if someone has any thoughts on what might have caused the speech  
server to become siolent, I'd appreciate that as well. I'm using  
everything default out of the box for the Ubuntu install. Like I said,  
it seems that it wants to speak, but it seems to just make a click and  
that's all.
