copying text to clipboard? and noncontiguous select?

Hi,

When I was signing up for this list, I thought I had to copy the  
password to the clipboard, then paste it in the prompt back on line. I  
was kind of baffled because I was already interacting with the text of  
the message body in Mail. How was I now going to select a specific  
portion of text for copy to the clipboard? What key presses woud I  
use? Being new at it, I believed I ran out of choices.


Ok, obviously I got it worked out because, here I am on this list. I  
chose the link which redirected me to where I just entered my new  
password and didn't need to bother with the original at all. I  
confess, it took a while for that light to dawn on this head.

But another question, if I may, how do you select things, especially  
files in a list, noncontiguously for copy or removal or whatever? Is  
there a non contiguous selection? The other thing is, once you start  
selecting contiguously, you do not hear what is being selected, so you  
must count the things to be selected beforehand and concentrate on  
what's being done. Am I doing something wrong? Must I work on files,  
or messages in Mail,  one at a time to be sure of what's going on?
