I was using vuescan because I couldn't get readiris to work right, but  
now that that's no problem now I'll be using readiris.  It has great  
character recognition.  It can be a little tricky configuring your  
scanner driver but it's a package well worth using and you ought to be  
able to get it for around $59 around Christmas.
