Hello,
Using the following combination of crazy setup, I have had complete
success with the Emprint embosser:
Tools You'll Need:
* Louis braille translator (thanks Greg!)
* Mac OS X Tiger or Leopard.
* WebKit, as in one of the steps you'll need to select an item from a
multi-select list box. Download latest nightly build at:
http://www.webkit.org/
This was tested on a MacBook Pro 17' 2.16 GHz CoreDuo with 2 GB RAM
and Mac OS X 10.5.5.
1. Open WebKit
2. Go to "localhost:631"
3. Click the "Admin" link.
4. Find your ViewPlus Emprint, Tiger, or other embosser by header.
5. Click "Modify" and then follow instructions.
6. On the "Make" screen, interact with the list and select "RAW" only.
Then stop interacting and click the button called "Button." It should
be called continue, but there is a bug in WebKit, can't win em' all.
7. Select "Local RAW" from the list, it should be the only selectable
item. Press return.
When you have completed the setup properly, your ViewPlus embosser
should be reporting that it uses a local raw queue.
Embossing:
1. Use Louis to import a file and translate it into braille.
2. On the processing tab, select /dev/null as you won't be directing
the output to the embosser right away.
3. After translation, open the Terminal program at /Applications/
Utilities/ or launch with Spotlight.
4. At the command line, type the following to emboss your file:
cat <file> |lp
Your file should emboss. Here is an example that may assist you.
cat ~/Documents/Example.brl |lp
or
cat /Users/rdour/Documents/Test.brl |lp
If your file and resulting translations live on an external flash or
hard disk:
cat /Volumes/External\ HD/Translations/Example.brl |lp
If you have more than one line printer, use the "man lp" command to
learn more about line printing. Also, try "man -k lp" for more
information.
If this all seems really difficult, maybe I can create an Automator
workflow for this, or an AppleScript that simply translates and
embosses the selected file. I want to avoid this, as not everyone
wants the same settings from Louis. Louis rocks, and I just need to
discover the best number of rows and columns for my paper.
NOTE: You must configure the Emprint first in Windows for legacy
braille embossing. To read a tutorial on this, visit ViewPlus at http://www.viewplus.com
and click Downloads, Tutorials, TSS 4.0, and download the .zip file.
Read the section about using Duxbury, it instructs you to basically
visit the Properties for the printer to adjust values in the Legacy tab.
I hope this helps someone. If anyone wants this to be placed in the
WIKI, let me know. This is a very rough draft of the instructions, and
I still have yet to figure out the best way to set cell count and row
count. Anyone know what an 8.5 by 11 sheet normally uses? I'm a bad
braille student, learned in 8th grade through freshman year, and then
came to the realization that world isn't made in braille. I never did
get the reading fast part down, I'm terribly slow. I can braille just
fine, and read reasonably. But little facts like how many cells are on
an 8.5 wide page and how many rows on an 11 length sheet? Nah, can't
remember.
