But is it possible to make a copy of an album in .mp3 format that is
totally independent of the Itunes library, that is that Itunes
shouldn't care where that copy lives and what's being done to it?

Hi
I'm not sure what is going on with the attempts at burning an
album. If it was 18 tracks over an hour in length, it would not fit
on one CD. However, why it acted as it did on 3 disks is something
I am not sure about.
As for deleting songs, make sure you do it in iTunes and not in
Finder. From experience, that's the only time I've seen that
message when syncing with my iPod. I had deleted songs via Finder
and iTunes still believed they were present.

Hi listers out there.
I'm desperately in need of your help. I have bought a couple albums
at Itunes store and am now trying to do one of two things. I'm
trying to convert them to .mp3 and i'm trying to burn the records
to cd.
I have chosen one of the records to burn from a cd and start the
process. I get an error that the playlist is too long, although the
status row, or whatever it is indicates it's 18 songs and lasts for
1.4 hours, in other words it should fit onto a cd. When i then try
to burn a cd or more as Itunes wants, Itunes burns from track 1 to
track 16 on 2 cds, that is, tracks 1 through 16 gets burnt 2 times
and then it burns from track 10 or thereabouts to track 18 on the
last cd, thereby burning a couple of songs for the third time. Ok,
i say to myself, let's try converting to .mp3 then. This works
well, however, then i get another version of the files i already
have in the library and when i try deleting the .mp3 files after
having done with them what i wanted, in order to make more space on
the hard drive and try synching with the ipod i'm told that the
files will not be imported because they aren't found although they
are in my library, it's the .mp3s that are gone as they should be,
because i don't want two versions of the same songs on different
places on the hard drive, because it just takes up space.
Did anyone understand what i just typed and could anyone tell me
how to propperly go about solving this problem?
Thanks so much.
