When you copy text from an OpenOffice.org, it copies it as formatted text. Many other applications (like Microsoft Word) do the same thing. So the result of a paste would likely be a mixture of the document's global formatting and the formatting of the pasted text.

I believe the Edit menu has an option "Paste Special" that might help here. This will open a dialog where one of the options is "Unformatted Text". Then you should only get the formatting from the host document.

Not something I have direct experience with, but using LaTeX with APA formatting might be a viable, if initially daunting, option:
