When you copy text from an OpenOffice.org, it copies it as formatted text. Many other applications (like Microsoft Word) do the same thing. So the result of a paste would likely be a mixture of the document's global formatting and the formatting of the pasted text.
I believe the Edit menu has an option "Paste Special" that might help here. This will open a dialog where one of the options is "Unformatted Text". Then you should only get the formatting from the host document.

and I tried like hell to follow the APA format standards and take care to indent etc. However, I obviously did not get it right and so I've lost a few points.
That's an understandable irritation!

Not something I have direct experience with, but using LaTeX with APA formatting might be a viable, if initially daunting, option:
