I am very appreciative of your assistance, and that of others on the list.
I will definitely be taking advantage of the knowledge on the list over the
coming weeks.
However, when entering a area of technology that I am essentially clueless
about I like to "sit" with someone with experience so that I can get the
metaphorical "booster shot" of knowledge and get all of my initial questions
answered in one go.

This list is here so that information can be freely shared thus further
drastically reducing the cost of obtaining and owning VoiceOver.
When I installed skype the other day, it downloaded as a dmg into my
users/davidpoehlman/downloads folder. this is my default folder for
downloads. it evolves much the way it does in windows. it uses your
account name for your home folder under users and then places some files
and folders there and one of them is downloads. You can change this of
cource in safari. By default, safari will probably open this .dmg file
and what is in it is the skype.app file which you can put anywhere but
there is an applications folder at the root of your hd where all the apps
are stored. I set my safari not to open these files so went to downloads
and opened the dmg so I could copy the file to the applications folder.
When I first ran the skype.appp file from my applications folder, it
provided me with a welcome screeen and then I continued and it was
installed. There was I think a license agreement to accept and after
that, it is just a matter of configuring and adding contacts etc. I'd be
willing to talk you through and answer questions as they come up at no
charge. using safari, installing other apps and the other questions you
have listed below because I make my money off the fact that the computers
are used so the more people using computers, the more money I make.
Most of what you seek has been discussed a lot on the mac voiceover list
but it doesn't matter what list you post to, we can help. The VoiceOver
list is a good place to start gathering the type of info you seek though.
The only person who can really compare windows and mac will be you. Once
you learn a couple of basic things about the os, the differences become
chrystal clear.

b. I am a Windows power user and have been using PCs for 20 years so
obviously there will be a learning curve
