Creating Shortcuts

Good afternoon,

I would like to create "shortcuts" from programs in my Applications  
folder to my Desktop folder.  In windows I would right-click on the  
item and select Send To > Desktop Shortcut.

Can someone please explain   how things differ in OS X?
