I asked about this as well. After some more thought, I guess in some respects the feature is useless because at least with outlook, if I decide I don't want the receipt to be sent, then it isn't.So, unless the client did send it automatically. So, guess there isn't much need for it in the end. Just my opinion.

And this is one of the stranger things in Mail, i mean every single email client has this feature, at least everyone that i know.:-) There are situations when a read- or return receipt is useful.
