Hi Tiff,
press command-shift-u to open the utilities folder from the finder or
desktop, in other words, from any folder.
find disc utility in any way which is confortable for you. I use tab
in icon view. Tab through here till you come to something that says
"firstaid". if it does not say "firstaid selected", press space on
it, tab to the list of discs and arrow down to your hd. if you
haven't changed its name, it will say macintosh hd. tab to the
"repair disc permissions button and press enter. tab to the results
table and down arrow. it will be "reading permissions database" for a
while but then it may or may not report some isses it finds. unless
it says otherwise, it fixes those issues. If you get errors n the
process, let us know what they are and we'll provide further
assistance if possible.
Thanks!

Okay, now I feel like an idiot. What is permission repair and how do
I run it?

I'd get the latest update and run permission repair. this might be
related to something else entirely.

I donno why, but lately, Ive been having some very annoying problems
with voiceover. the speech will stop and then restart itself, even
saying "Voiceover On". Then, when I close the lid of the machine and
open it again, it'll either get really slow or really fast. I didn't
do anything major and don't have the latest update. Could it be a
virus or is it some quirk in the machine?
Thanks,
