You can hear all the voices on this page:

http://assistiveware.com/ivoxsamples.php?voice=Sarah_iVox_HQ

Loaded up with the QuickTime plugin in the browser when I tried it but I think they are just mp3 files.

Hi Alex,

I went to http://assistiveware.com and discovered that they do indeed have
several German voices. However, I would like to hear the voices before
buying them. When I clicked on the German voices, nothing happened, nor
could I find a link on the page that would enable me to hear a sample. Does
one need to be using a Mac to hear the voices? I shouldn't think so, but
what do I know!

Thank you,

Mike

Hi,

They sure do. Sarrah is pretty good, and so is Klause.

Thanks,
Alex,

And as far as speech in other languages, you can get the infovox iVox voices from http://assistiveware.com, and I believe they have German voices available.

Hey Mike, I remember your podcast in Vienna you did for BLind Cool Tech. I'm sure many will answer your questions, but Open Office and likely iWOrk will do what you need. As far as ocr, Read Iris has worked well for me. Fusion will certainly allow you to use MS Office until your sure Open Office or iWOrk will do what you need. I'll let others address the other questions.

Hello to all of you,

My name is Mike Busboom, and I will soon be acquiring a MacBook, running Leopard. This will be my first foray into the Mac world, and I have a lot of questions. I've been a PC user since forever, and I am hopeful that a knowledge of computers in general will make the learning curve less steep. Although I am not yet a Mac user, I'd like to ask a few initial questions:

1. I will take possession of my MacBook in late February or early March when I visit my parents in the United States. Since I live in Vienna, Austria, I use German a lot. Does the MacBook come with foreign language
TTS engines? If not, where can I purchase them?

2. I am a translator and also edit a lot of materials written in English. Most of my clients want me to edit their materials in MS Word. They depend on my annotations as well, so the ability to annotate texts and
have it work seamlessly with speech is crucial. This is a relatively
straightforward process in MS Word running under Windows with Window-Eyes. I have been told that MS Word on the Mac is not yet supported in Voice Over. Furthermore, I have been told that what I want to accomplish could be done using Open Office. Is this true, to your knowledge? If it isn't, I plan to buy Fusion anyway and continue to use MS Office running under Windows,
though I would like to use programs for the Mac whenever possible.

3. Is it possible to import my Firefox bookmarks into an Internet
browser running on the Mac?

4. At present, I am using the K1000 as my OCR package. Is there a
comparable, accessible OCR software package for the Mac?

Well, this should cover it for now. I apologize if I have asked too many
questions, but perhaps I will be able to reciprocate and give others
assistance, once I have gained enough experience with my own MacBook.

Kindest regards to all,

Mike
