I would briefly like to discuss some of the changes for 2.0 that I find horrendous. Thus far, I have found very few of the changes better.
Most of the changes for the better are not visible, especially if you only use Writer or Calc. OOo 2.0 is a major code rewrite. It removes a lot of the problems from previous versions. The code is more manageable now, the installer is more maintainable, the GUI fits better on the corresponding system, etc.
These are good points, and I am glad that the code is more manageable. Perhaps it is not all doom and gloom, but I would just like to keep every things at the same level of excellence.
General: -------- * Support for the OpenDocument format.
We kind of had this in 1.1.x, it is just a more visible international one now, but our document style was open before.
* Improved PDF export. * Usability review (e.g. toolbars, text strings, icons). * New toolbar concept/design.
Good or bad could be in user preference. But overall, I think I am in favor of the changes.
* Digital Signatures.
* Thumbnail support for 3 major file browsers (Explorer -- Windows,
Nautilus -- Gnome, Konqueror -- KDE).
* Keyboard shortcuts for paragraph styels <--- you mentioned this one.
* A lot of changes to improve import/export with MS Office.
That is good, although there seems to be no plan to fix the cell formats going between Calc and Excel. Currently all cell formats (at least dates) are exported out of Calc as user defined formats in Excel. So even if my cell is formatted as MM/DD/YY in Calc, it shows fine in Excel but it is treated as a custom format. :(
Writer: ------- * Word count in selections. * Tables in tables.
Tables in Tables will be neat, I have situations where I have wanted to do that.
I worry that the bigger row count is going to lead to bigger file sizes, when really, who needs 64,000 rows in one sheet?Calc: ----- * 64K rows.
* Improvements to DataPilot.
I hope so, Impress has really not Impressed me (HAHAHA). When compared to PowerPoint for a strictly presentation usage, I have been disappointed.Impress & Draw: --------------- * Major changes. These programs have been significantly redesigned.
You told me once it was better than PowerPoint because it had vector graphics, but when you are making a presentation of your physics notes, it doesn't really matter. :)
Databse: -------- * It exists! This is a completely new module.
Programming: ------------ * Brand new scripting framework. * PackageManager GUI -- A GUI for adding and removing OOo extensions.
_Change #1_
You used to be able to return to your previous editing position when you reopened a writer document.
[snip]
Now, you have no option to restore it. There check box is still there in 1.9.69 but it does nothing.
If the checkbox is there, and it does nothing, it is a bug; not a change in policy. Let's distinguish between bugs, and real changes.
The check box things is a bug. The lack of a shortcut is a bug.
The fact that we can no longer load a document and have it automatically return to where we last had our cursor is a change in policy.
_Change #3_
We also can't display the file name in the Title Bar anymore. Now we have to use the file name only. No choice like there kind of was before. Why is this? Because users might get confused.
I don't understand what you just said :-(
OOo 1.1.x -- If your document had a title defined in properties it displayed in the title bar, else the file name showed. (A choice of sorts).
OOo 2.0 -- Only the file name will no matter what.
OOo is supposed to be innovative and unique and that is something I am going to miss.
I find it innovative in many ways. Though not enough in others.
True, overall, I am happy. Styles rock the house and the math editor rules. Other things could be better if there weren't changed.
