Personally I have never seen what all the fuss is about on the issue of
word count. Open a blank document, copy and paste your para into it and
there you have a para word count. Probably takes one or two seconds
longer to do that than go to a specific menu item. How many people
regularly need to count the words in a para? To me getting better
support for vector graphics is far more important, getting documents to
load and save faster is far more important.
Yeah - pretty much everything can be done without a computer. I mean, I can write this email by hand on paper, and catch a boat to England and hand it to you. But the purpose of computers is to make things easier. Even within OOo, I could hand count the words - so you're right, who needs a word count?
The fact is, a hell of a lot of people need word count. Authors, journalists, essayists, students, teachers, speech writers, editors, ... the list goes on. It's standard on every office suite in the world, except OOo (until 2.0). To me, the biggest advancement of the word count is it's existence. I'm not so excited about the "selection" count. I'm excited that the users list will no longer be slammed with "Where's the word count?" And I can stop saying "Dang it, I forgot, this is Open Office - the word count is buried!" every time I have to do a word count for my article and I'm working at home. (I have to use Word at work - old Mac, no OOo.)
