Hi all,
i want some market details with respect to Open office. If somebody can share the numbers, i will be happy, if not if somebody can direct me to a page where i can extract from. i have to pitch with an angel with respect to my product and substantiate that it is worthy of us to write an add-in into Open office on Linux.
i don't think we can provide much data. probably the best source is http://stats.openoffice.org/index.html
you may have luck asking those questions to the marketing project http://marketing.openoffice.org
1. How may open office users are there till date?
this is impossible to estimate, considering there are many source to obtain OOo exepting download:
- OOo is included on CD with some computer magazines;
- OOo in included in almost all Linux distributions;
- OOo is sold on CD by various 3-rd parties;
- OOo is preinstalled by some PC sellers, charities etc.
also, one download or CD sold should not be mapped to one user, because it can be installed on an unlimited number of computers.
2. How many are Windows based and Linux based?
counting the downloads, Windows has a bigger percentage compared with Linux, but this ignore the fact that most Linux users already have OOo installed as default by their distribution and don't have any need to download it, or may prefer to obtain it (upgrade) from distro specific channels (apt-get, yum)
3. How many are Enterprise customers who have adopted Open office and How many are SME's and How many are Individuals?
you may want to add here governments, they are a big 'customer', one recent example is: http://native-lang.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?listName=com&msgNo=816
4. Which all verticals do these enterprise and SME customers belong? Life sciences, manufacturing, Financials institutions and Hightech?
Similary can somebody share with me some data on Linux and Open platform
1. How many enterprises and SME have adopted Linux and open platform for their back office operations? 2. How many enterprises and SME's have adopted linux as desktops? 3. Why do customers predominatly use linux and open platform?
the same can be argued as for OOo data.
thank you all in advance... please help me in getting some numbers.. i can't afford these market research reports.
i believe neither OOo can't afford such a study, which, as i argued above, will have probably many flaws.
