Hi Nicu,
Thank you for your response. I'm still struggling a little bit to find my way, but things are starting to sink in. I feel a little frustrated with myself because this seems not so straightforward to me.

What is the /nonav/ directory?
/nonav/ added to the URL permits a page on OOo website to be displayed without the navigation bar (the left column on any page)
I see how this is working now... I don't quite understand how... I guess the file must be placed into two places when it is uploaded via cvs? That way you can view it in two different ways, one inside the OOo CSS template, and one as a stand-alone view? I'm guessing here. I'm writing about it because I figure others might have these same questions (why would I be the only one), but also if I'm grossly mistaken about how things work, I'm kinda hoping for more guidance so that I can understand this correctly.
Or maybe somehow you can have two upper paths to the same file in a directory tree? I don't think I've seen this done before.
What is the /*checkout*/ directory?
*checkout* is a CVS command, meaning a file is retrieved from server
I understand that checkout is a CVS command. I'm just not greatly sure yet in how the /*checkout*/ directory plays into things.
How are files placed into these directories?
i believe you already know, OOo website is managed using CVS (Concurrent Versioning System). a web interface is provided for CVS, so anyone can look at a file, without need to install and configure additional software (a CVS client)
Maybe you are saying that these directories are part of that web interface which allows folks to actually view the files?
What does it mean when files are in these directories?
Example:
http://installation.openoffice.org/nonav/source/browse/*checkout*/installation/readlicense/docs/readme/readme.xrm?rev=HEAD&only_with_tag=HEAD&content-type=text/plain
in this example you try to download (*checkout*) a file from the CVS repository and display the raw content in a browser window without additional website elements (nonav)
I found my way to this file in the navigation tree, and will show that path here for more clarity:
http://installation.openoffice.org/source/browse/installation/readlicense/docs/readme/readme.xrm
See, that path doesn't show directories above the source and browse directories. I think that is the part I am trying to wrap my head around... how those upper directories play into things. This (OOo) is my first experience with cvs, so I apologize if all my questions sound a little stupid. I am very new at this, and I want to understand it well. I dug around in the CVS manuals for answers to these questions, and I struggled for days as to where or who to ask about these things. I feel that not knowing the answers to these questions has hindered my own progress with things. I want to be helpful, but still don't know enough to help where it seems like maybe it is needed.
Thanx again for your help. I appreciate it.
:~~)
