Greetings

I admit I have nagged you enough with this so this is pretty much the
last time I talk about this subject. For those of you who have not
read my last two messages regarding this matter (and for some weird,
inexplicable reason, present interest in what I say) I suggest you
read them, after taking a look at this stuff.

What I've been doing with a couple of posts is advocating that most of
the functionality in OOo be moved from the application itself to
plugins that implement that behavior. I've also been advocating that
users should be able to select the level of complexity in the
application (aka the number of plugins that are enabled by default)
through selecting an installation type (Standard, Professional,
Enterprise) which would still install all the plugins but just enable
those which would be needed.

I won't tell you the benefits of a plugin architecture as you're aware
of them, and I do believe that no one doubts a lot of stuff should be
implemented as plugins (even if they were all to be loaded in by
default). This is, mainly a matter of developers and money which, in
OSS world are scarce.

Here's some graphics of the level of simplification I was suggesting on my blog:

And one last thing. People that pirate windows xp choose professional
because of the name. 99% of them are idiots and think that
professional actually will be a lot better then home or whatever else
Microsoft has. I'm curios if those users actually install the cracked
version of Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition. (rather then the
standard one). Anyway particularization to a specific piece of
software is not really an argument (aka I'm not convinced). If you
were to actually make Personal the default option and write two or
three lines next to each option (i.e. "Install a Personal Edition if
you are a home user who doesn't require complex editing options. You
may later select plugins to accommodate your needs") I do believe a
large amount of users would stick to the default.

Let me know what ya think.

DISCLAMER: The author awards acknowledges the possibility he is an
idiot. The author acknowledges that the probability of him being an
idiot is quite high. However, the author may not be held liable for
any damages that his idiotic words or actions cause. If my talking
makes you sick it's not my fault :)

Thanks.
