1. People are more willing to donate money as they get a little something back in return - as well as supporting a great software product.
2. People wear the t-shirts and your software product gets advertisement ... for free
I don't know about proceeds, I think they are a for profit group.

for fun i toyed myself with this idea (http://www.cafepress.com/nicuooo) a couple of months ago, but never sold anything (nor tried to promote it in order to sold something).
adding $10 or $20 would practically double the price, being, IMO, quite a rip-off.
