No. StarBasic doesn't require Java, only Macros using the Scripting
Framework (f.e. JavaScript). The messages about Java you mention below
are bugs.

Yes, the XML filters usually use Java. But most end user won't need them
at all. I for myself didn't use any Java based filters in all the years
they are built into OpenOffice.org.
