Not sure if I can ask a basic question like this here, but if not please suggest which list I should subscribe to.
I have received a doc file attached to an email and I can neither save it or open it. I am using OE6 and had never had this problem before when using MS office. Is there a setting I need to change perhaps ? It is grayed out where it shows the attachment,

Please understand... I'm not meaning to be unkind here... but I'm kind of wondering why you're asking about this on an OpenOffice.org mailing list.
You're using Outlook Express 6, and it won't let you save the attachment somewhere (let alone open it directly with an external application). I _think_ you'll get a faster response from asking on an Outlook Express mailing list (do they exist?).
Hopefully it's just something simple. :)
