I tried that right after I sent in this e-mail. I realized that I had upgraded to 1.1.4, but was still using the oo* command to launch instead of the s* 
1.1.4 works like a dream...Problem solved. thanks :)

I have been experiencing a problem with Writer. When I am typing
anything up and then right-click my computer locks up. So far this has
only occured on the linux version of OpenOffice.org. On a really fast
computer it may eventually recover, but nothing else responds until that
menu finally shows up. I am currently running version 1.1.2 on my linux
box, and it has this problem. On my windows system I am running 1.1.4,
and it works without a hitch.

Why not upgrade to 1.1.4 on the Linux system to see if the problem continues 
there.
