You have some options to circumvent some steps of the wizard. So you can
start with a prepared document of your own and let the wizard do only
the "merge" step. If you want to get rid of the wizard completely you
can develop your own component (maybe even in Basic) that uses the
MailMerge API of OOo to do what you want.

If you have some particular suggestions how MailMerge in OOo could be
improved the best way is to file enhancement requests in Issuezilla. It
will not be possible to do anything for the OOo2.0 release but we hope
it will not be the last one. :-)

I'm not a mail merge expert, so please forgive me if I don't comment on
your observations, but I'm sure that if you create some enhancement
requests (possibly after some discussion here) they will be seriously
considered by the developers.

Best regards,
Mathias
