Yes, this is a known issue. There are already a lot of people working on
that. You can expect large speed improvements in the final. :-)

I agree, the current speed of the slide show effects does not qualify
Impress for productional use, but that's not what a beta is intended to
be used for. We had to decide either to wait for the performance
improvements or to use Impress in the Beta as it is and have a larger
time frame for the feedback in *all* applications. We decided to do the
latter, so please stay tuned.
