I was in a school earlier this week where a Physics teacher had created some really impressive animated presentations in Powerpoint. Unfortunately these depend on the ability to specify arbitrary paths to animate bitmap graphics along. Earlier versions of PPT don't support this. But the feature allows non-programmers to produce CAL software for whole class teaching
i believe you want this kind of animation: http://software.newsforge.com/software/05/02/16/1427218.shtml?tid=130&tid=75&tid=93
The ideal capability would be to trigger sound or other events at points
on any arbitratily defined path. eg Animate the charges moving around an
electric circuit and brighten the lamp as the charges travel faster.
i can't comment much about the sound support in Impress because don't have signifiant experience in this area, but i find it cumbersome (involving Mozilla plugins etc.)
This teacher would gladly move his development effort to OOo *if* it
supported the same features as the latest version of Powerpoint.
I'm assuming 2.0 can't do this type of thing because I have looked and couldn't find anything. I don't know what the plans are for later versions. As Education Lead I can say that this is potentially killer
bitmap animation on arbitrary paths is possible in 1.1.x
application because if we refined this a bit to be better than PPt, its the sort of thing people would install OOo to run just for this feature and since most schools are on older versions of PPT that don't support it there is a window of opportunity.
