It's a valid concern. Historically, other office suites have been known to have very vulnerable, weak, easily circumvented encryption for most of a decade. (I'd almost have to say that it sounds like it is on purpose.)

Also, historically, some closed source applications have been found to have factory installed back doors and the corporate executives have sworn in court that they would grant access to certain govenrments if asked.

Where can we read a bit about how the OOo files are encrypted and which algorithm(s) are used? The OOo help menu doesn't say much.
