Yes. Over a dozen different formats. Some are more incompatible some are less. All lost data or formatting to some extent when switching. Here are the ones I can recall off the top of my head. I'm sure I'm missing a few.

Some are much more incompatible than others, such as MS-Word 6 and MS-Word 95. They do not use the same format and the programs could not differentiate between them and garbled the files. At one time I had both and found this out the hard way, but fortunately had discovered the error in time*. Since batch processing is impossible in MS and there was no way to read Word 6 files in Word 95 and no way to write Word 95 files in Word 6, I had to manually save each file (about 300 of them) in RTF.
Same goes for MS-Word (MS-Windows) 2 and MS-Word (MS-Windows) 6. And also for MS-Word (MS-Windows) XP vs MS-Word (Mac) XP.

* I also did a dry run of an emergency restore of MS-Windows 95 by wiping the HD and re-installing MS-Windows 95 from the OEM restore disks -- it also required a half hour on the the phone to the manufacturer to get all registry hacks and other kludges needed to get the drivers working for the modem and other peripherals. That was in August 1997.
