My brother and my best friend have both GIMP and Gaim under Windows and 
neither has had problems. So I think it's fine.

They both use the version of Gaim that is statically linked with GTK. 
Maybe that's why. So, to be safe, go for that one. Incidentally, if you go 
to the NLC conf page, that's the one I link to. The safer one.
