Tony,
That's pretty clear to me, a Western New Yorker, but I'd suggest 
capitalizing and/or using bold on the "don't". Here's my suggestions 
for changing the wording slightly:
"OpenOffice.org x.x.x can be set to automatically open the following 
file types. This means ..."
Then maybe:
"If you want to try opening these files in OpenOffice.org, use 'File 
... Open ...' and browse to the file you want."
Well, I hope this adds to the consensus and not division.
