That's why, even in the typebar generation, professional typewriters had half-stops on the platen. But, of course, you need a bit more to get the miniature type -- interchangeable elements such as on the IBM Selectric, or sometimes replaceable clip-on slugs on one or two typebars, such as I had on my old Sears electric.
