One thing I will suggest, if the issue is wanting a particular sheet to print, is to try *File > Print > Options > Print only selected sheets*. I agree 100% that this option is buried, but it is there. You do not have to use print ranges if your goal is just to print sheet 2 versus the whole spredsheet.

Now, Margins are actually, IMO, a little bit nicer in OOo. They are set up using styles (F11 on your keyboard). You can set up a style for each sheet individually, or if you have some sheets in common, like summary or report sheets, you can set their setting at the same time. This can be advatageous, because if you have two sheets that should have the same formatting, you can just change the style and both sheets change simultaneously.

If nothing else, this is just as simple as Excel, the only difference is that you have to make a style for each that you want to be different. I like it a little bit better, but it is different, and there is a small learning curve.

So the default ought to be to print whatever you are viewing, and if you want to do different, then use the more advanced options provided. As it is now you have to use advanced options (advanced for my wife) just to do a simple print.

In 2.0, the default will be to print the selected sheet. And to suppress the output of empty sheets. :)

Has she tried *Insert > Note*. The only real difference I have noticed is that the notes in Calc do not always stay up like they do in Excel and I can't find an option to leave them up in 1.1.4, maybe in 2.0.

... yes she has, and the problem you have noted she hates. Also, you can nicely format the notes in Excell, and you most definitely can't in
OO. Formatted notes from Excell stay formatted in OO (fortunately).

... I haven't used 2.0 beta, but I suspect that the problems I've described will still be present.

2.0 does not change the viewing behavior of notes, however, you can now format them! :)

I have file an issue on this <http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=47493>.

I'm trying to get my kids to use OO, but they prefer to use Word because they understand it. Nevertheless, OO is all they get on there machines!

That is excellent. One of the things I have come to believe is that children should be functional in many different software programs so that if they are presented with a new one later, they can use it. What is it that they find difficult. If you travel to http://documentation.openoffice.org or www.oooauthors.org you may find some helpful docs.

Also, for your children, you may want to check out INGOTs <http://www.irlcomputers.com/ingots/content.php>. It is a program that certifies children in their ability to use office software to accomplish tasks and helps teach them about community service and open source software. You can MS Office for most of the work. I think it is a great progam and hopefully will take off more.

HTH, let me know if I can be of any more assistance!
