A while ago, before you joined the community, we had this discussion,
about releases, etc. We even formed a Release Committee. The result was
the current schema, with "stable" being advertised for end users, and
the development builds for testers and developers. With the CWS
structure, as i believe JÃrg pointed out, the developer builds are
pretty much of beta quality.

Where does one find them? Here: <http://download.openoffice.org/680/>.
We used to advertise the existence of these on the homepage but that
produced some confusion. We advertise the developer build from the
immensely popular download.openoffice.org/index.html page. There is
also a link on the Development homepage,
<http://development.openoffice.org/>. It could be made bigger, to be
sure, or we could have more information there regarding how often new
builds are issued.

New builds are further announced on [email protected], which is
the general list for things having to do with releases. The page (680)
is also updated after each new build is issued. New builds may also be
(I have not checked) announced in the Newsletter; if not, it's a good
place. That newsletter is read by *many*.

As to the stable updating... it's a bit of an art. As has been
repeatedly pointed out, one person's "bug fix" is another's new
feature--look at 1.1.1.

If people are curious about the release logic and cycle, then they
should look at the pages that describe it. See, for starters,
<http://development.openoffice.org/releases/index.html>. Of course, we
(in this case, Martin and Erwin) also always need help updating the
pages and making sure things are presented in a clear fashion, so as to
give would-be developers of OOo a better sense of the speed at which OOo
is being developed.

Best,
Louis
