Actually this is called the Java-Trap which is, if you code in Java at least
build it under GCJ or a free libraries from Java and not on a proprietary
platform (Sun, IBM, MS, BEA).

This is basically because it automatically make it incompatible with the Free
software since even if it's GPL it is dependant on a proprietary layer. Kind of
the whole Kernel mess a few days back and Linus rantfest about BitKeeper.

The current free implementation of Java for example doesn't include the Swing
components usually used on pure Sun Java tools.

This is also another situation particulary with GNOME as they are 3 forces
pushing to be the next development framework of Gnome. Miguel is pushing Mono,
Redhat is pushing GCJ and sun is pushing... guess what? Java of course. And
actually the closest alternative is Python, while python development hasn't
explode is gaining ground around the Gnome utilities.

It would be interesting if some unexpected spurr of development under the PyUNO
can take place and make it more standard with other developments around the
linux interface. But python is a tragic story under the current OOo build.

Quoting Daniel Carrera <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Hello Jack,

Thank you for your input.

Have you investigated this issue? Do you actually know in which way
OpenOffice.org might or might not be using to Java?

Incidentally, I am using OpenOffice.org right now without using Java.

I would be happy to discuss this further if you have specific comments
and requests.

Cheers,
Daniel.

Please stop using Java as part of Open Office. It is not free software
and makes it less likely that Open Office itself will remain free.
