I hear you. Sadly, we can't arbitrarily change the format. The #1 selling point of OpenDocument, and the reason why the European Union is considering it, is because no single vendor controls it.
In any event, it looks like the problem isn't in Calc per se, but with the OD format. At least it's good to isolate the issue.
