Hi,

This kind of question would be more appropriate for the 'users' list.

I have learned to move my dictionaries between snapshot version of the Beta and

Now - I have recently created a new dictionary in Tools-options-language-writing aids - ticked it on the check box and it works and stores words of its own category (company names as it happens).
BUT it does not appear in the ENus file along with the others - and I cannot
find it to copy it for the next upgrade. It must be SOMEWHERE but where?

Can someone explain if it is not too esoteric? I have WinXP SP2.

A personal dictionary which you created using the office itself is different from installable dictionaries. As it is personal, it is stored as user-specific data. This data is stored in directory $HOME/.openoffice.org.XXX on Linux/Unix systems and in %APPDATA%\OpenOffice.orgXXX on Windows. Here %APPDATA% is a hidden directory, which typically is at
 "C:\Documents And Settings\<your username>\ApplicationData".

As the OpenOffice.orgXXX directory name contains the milestone number, you get a new instance of this each time you install a new milestone build. To carry personal data or settings forward, you can copy individual files from the old to the new user data or simply try to copy or rename the old folder to the new name before starting the new version for the first time.

You can find the exact name of the directory in the program\bootstrap.ini file within you installation. Look for the line that says "UserInstallation=$SYSUSERCONFIG/<directory-name>".

[And I would do the same with templates if I could find them as well].

Your personal templates should be in the user data directory as well.

Earlier in the development cycle incompatible changes in the user data were reasonably frequent, so simply moving forward all user data between milestone builds was not a good idea. But since Beta this ought to have stabilized, so you can try to simply copy or rename your user data folder as you install newer milestones.

HTH,

Ciao, Joerg
