So why put such long winded and therefore from an end users

well have put C++ in there as far as the typical user is
concerned it makes no difference.
Unfortunately I have to agree. I'm convinced I'll never crack the
macro code here, despite have done some neat thing under VBA.
Some of that is an advancing lack of patience, perhaps, but not
all by any means. And I had wrongly thought MS's VBA
documentation couldn't be worsted. Luckily my macro needs are not
as great as they used to be.

Maybe you are triying to be too independent. A LOT of people (not
programmmers)
are doing wonders with OOoBasic. Please visit OOoForum and look into OOoBasic
you will find a whole lot of snippets and explanations of OOoBasic.
Also is not the language syntaxis is more about the framework of UNO which add
some complexity. However another place to look is http://ext.openoffice.org.nz
which is a wiki to PUSH the development of macros and add-ons.
Also remember that Python, java and soon C# scripts would be able to interact
wtih OOo UNO.
