As I wrote: it *could* be a good idea, I just didn't think it to the
end. My personal choice is not using any automagic things, but I read
your mail as a suggestion to add one. It was not me that asked for
automatic selection of content for the display in the caption bar (what
IMHO is even worse than an automatic proposal for a title or file name).
Sorry if I misunderstood you.

I also prefer the file name, though a file name (without the complete
path) admittedly is also not unique, but I just learned from Marco and
Shoshannah that there might be valid reasons to allow the user to work
with titles instead of file names and I wanted to take this into
consideration.

To conclude: the file name is the identifier for a document. It is taken
to chose the file and it is the name you usually should see in the
caption bar.

If due to restrictions (whatever they are) the file name is not good
enough for the caption bar (and so can't sufficiently express the real
nature of the document) a "title" metadata might be appropriate as a
replacement in the caption bar. Wether the caption bar should display
the one or the other depends on the documents and in rare cases (where
always only one kind of documents is edited) from the environment. This
can be supported well by a document specific setting with a selectable
default.

Best regards,
Mathias
