You coul have saved some time by addressing to the list. Yes it is a 
valuable suggestion the one of specifiying that information on the tar.gz. 
But usually this doubts could rapidly be responded on this list. We have 
used the /opt/ since OpenOffice.org 1.0 4 years ago so for most people is 
rather obvious. 
 Still you have rpm tools to view where will your files will go before 
installing.
