I've been trying to follow the licensing threads, but the fact that most

I am in the middle of developing an "off the shelf" software package that
will be sold in retail stores. I would like to include functionality similar
to that of OpenOffice with the product.
So this brings up multiple questions:
- I understand superficially the LGPL. My understanding is that, if I incude OO as a library that is called by the main application, I would only need to
provide source for OO and not the core application. Is that correct?

I suggest consulting with the OSI since is the actual organization that govern the licencing issue. They created the LGPL which is what OpenOffice.org conform to. And is my understandment that they DO have lawyers.

This list is mostly volunteers and enthusiasts.

- Do all the rules still apply if the primary product will be for retail
sale? 'cause, technically, I would start making a profit of OO as it would
be a selling point of the product.

Yes you can earn the money you need, some people are already doing it so through different channels. Mostly web.

- If, from a licensing standpoint, it's OK to distribute and sell my product
within the guidelines of the above (source distribution for OO only,
including modifications), are there any specific branding requirements or
notifications that need to be made on the packaging?

It will be wise to also mention the website for future upgrades. You can put value added if you want to, like bundle it with written manuals etc.

- If this doesn't belong in this mailing list, where should it go?

OSI.org might be the best place concerning thelicensing.

Thanks all for your assistance.
Tnx & Rgds...
