The rest of the world considers whatever their company chose at the
standard, be it Notes, Outlook, Thunderbird or whatever obscure mailer
which salespeople happen to know the Boss wife.

And all these have widely different UIs (esp Notes)

MS didn't manage to get the same grip on this market than on the office
suite one - there's no need to ape them blindly.

I'm not talking about "apeing them blindly". Nor would I suggest copying Notes, either. But if you look at all Outlook and Evolution (I have no experience with Notes) there are some similarities to the UI paradigm.

On the other hand, the calendar extensions to Mozilla and TB are basically just "bolted on" with no real attempt to unify the UI. It just pops up in a separate window and there is no real interaction with the base program other than utilizing the Gecko engine.

Finally, AFAIKT, the Sunbird/Calendar project has been stuck at the 0.20 release stage for the last year and a half at least. What didn't work a couple years ago still doesn't work, and what doesn't work are some things that would seem fairly important for many users. It seems like a dead project to me.
