Yes, exactly. Previous OOo versions *did* overwrite the original file,
but in these versions AutoSave was not enabled by default. The
"AutoSave" in OOo2 is a protection against data loss in case of fatal
problems like power outage, system crashes etc. When OOo itself crashes
it tries to create another copy of all files that have been modified
after their last AutoSave. In nearly every case this is successful, but
it's good to have an insurance against fatal errors also.

If people tried out before they complain we could have saved us a lot of
fruitless discussions.
