if your going open go all the way.
It's not practical to go all in one step for most sites.
A very good first step is to migrate away from Microsoft
Office. Once users are happy with OpenOffice, switching
the underlying operating system is a lot easier.

Hello all,
My name is Eduardo Martinez and I am a student at Humboldt State University,

II want to start to work on a proposition in my school to promote the use of
OO on a campus wide level. Various students besides myself are really tired
of MS Office being imposed on the student community. I feel the need to
implement the use of OpenDocument compatible software on a campus wide level
for various reasons. Primarily the inconsistancy presented when trying to
access class documents. I was wondering if anybody in the community could
point me in the right direction for resources to create this proposition.
thank you very much.
Have a look at:

There's lots of good stuff at those sites.
To roll out OOo, you need to do it in waves.
The goal of each wave is to verify that a small set of users can
get through a week without using Microsoft Office.
During each wave, notice what problems the users have, and prepare training
materials for
the next wave.
And have the people from the previous waves hold the hands of the
people in the next wave. Personal attention is important, I think.
One possible strategy:
The first wave should be just you and your five best friends.
The second wave should be ten or so eager, tech-savvy early adopter CS students,
The third wave should be ten or so non-tech-savvy students.
The fourth wave should be CS professors :-)
The fifth wave should non-CS professors
The sixth wave should be administrators.
etc.
Good luck!
