Robin,
That would be a very interesting case study. Would you have the time
and interest to write up the situation, the problems, and the reasons
for selecting TeX and OOo?
Maybe it could be on Newforge but, regardless, it would be a valuable an
interesting resource on its own: It would be useful as documented facts
counter to MS apologists rants. Too many MS apologists really overlook
any and all shortcomings, especially in the absence of specific examples.
In the absence of specific examples, it is often claimed by MS fans that
there are no problems, but then talking to other staff over coffee,
there turn out to be the ones you described. (Limiting the discussion
to the sccope of problems encountered with MSO) Then when I go back to
the MS apologist with specific examples, they admit readily that, yes,
those problems do exist.
It usually finishes with them going on some form of a rant about how
those are not really problems because they will all work perfectly once
everyone is running the same version. In cases where they already are
running the same version then the rant is about how those are not really
problems because they will all work perfectly once everyone is running
the *next* version or patch. ad infinitum...
I know it's hard to counter a faith/religion/political movement with
hard facts alone, but until other methods present themselves as viable
that's the task at hand. Documenting some case studies would help a lot.

Around work here, people work between computers that range from W98,
2000 and XP. MS Office versions are even wider. Final formatting for
presentation is a real pain and in many cases, formatting is lost
between computers. Our organization now allows documents to be
presented in pdf format but Office doesn't include PDF generator at
this time. Available through an add-on. The biggest issue has been
MS's auto formatting. It takes over the document an has destroyed
hours of work and "Won't Undo!"
People are moving to both LaTeX and OOo because both of these provide
more control. Our organization is even providing templates in LaTex
and looking at OOo versions.
I will look into it at a later date. Right now I am very busy for the
next month.
I would be glad to.
I will be unable to use some hard examples from other people unless I
create them myself for various business related reasons. But from
what others have told me, it won't be hard to create the examples. I
will even try to get some screen shots of the problems.
