Others have already answered well. To help you to better understand
your current situation, note that if you keep saving in .doc format,
there is NO guarantee *today* (unless your files are really simple)
that:

*) if you did it with OO.o, MS Office will open them without losses
*) if you did it with MS Office, any other application will open them
   without losses

That's why there is a petition to add OpenDocument support to MS
Office. To get rid of this problem for good. Have you already signed
it? See http://opendocumentfellowship.org/
