I wonder what kind of formatting is getting screwed up? I've saved to and read from MS Word docs with more complicated formatting than I dreamed it could handle and never had a problem.
One case that comes to mind is with a doc my boss wrote in Word that had numerous pics, text wrapping around pics, outlines, Table of Contents, index, and bibliography. It looked the same and printed same with OOo as it did with Word. I even made some minor updates and sent it back with no issues. The only thing I've ever had a problem with is password protected documents. I have to unprotect them with Word first before using them in OOo.
