A return receipt request is part of an e-mail. Removing the request
means you have to change the content of the e-mail. IANAL but I assume
that this could be problematic from a legal POV.

Besides that I doubt that our mailing list software is technically able
to do it, it fails to do even more important things properly. ;-)

OTOH dealing with return receipt requests can be done in two ways:

If everybody on the list sent a receipt to each requester I'm sure these
clueless people (yes, people sending a return receipt request to a
mailing list *are* clueless!) would surely try to switch if off ASAP.
OK, this needs some organisation but it would be fun. :-)

Another (less funny but more polite) way to deal with return receipt
requests is to configure your mail client to ignore them so that they
won't bother you anymore. I see return receipt requests as a violation
of my privacy and so I always ignore them.

In TBird you can do that in "Tools-Options-Advanced-Return Receipts",
you also have to make sure that you have enabled this global setting for
all accounts in the account settings (in case you already did some
changes for one of them individually).

By calling a certain behavior clueless it don't intend to offense
anybody - we all need some learning at times. But I don't have a better
word for people working with e-mails without knowing how to do it
properly. Maybe because I'm a "little bit clueless" about the english
language. :-)
