Nabble is another alternative. See

There was a similiar discussion of this on the OpenOffice Users list a few days 
ago. I don't think changing mailing list software will solve the problem. 
Mailman's archive is not searchable. Besides a searchable archive, users also 
need a threaded view and a web gateway to post to the list. 

Both Nabble and Gmane can do that. Nabble is a new project that tries to 
improve upon existing solutions. One improvement is that it allows a project's 
lists to be organized into a heirachy and thus browsed and searched from a 
single place instead of having to go to each different lists. For example, all 
OpenOffice lists are under this node:
