A contact manager sounds like a potentially useful extension for Thunderbird. Have you tried suggesting it there as a feature request?

As far as storing or sending documents, I suspect that too much of that has been as a surrogate for proper file sharing or, as it is called nowadays, 'network accessable storage'. It used to be an integral part of any organization's computing infrastructure. Usually it was Novell's Netware, but MS succeeded in taking their market share [1] However, MS' replacement for Novell hasn't worked and people send attachments or use sneakernet instead. Yeah, excuses can be made and dances performed, but at the end of the day there's still a million attachments getting sent.

There are not as many extensions, yet, for Thunderbird as for Firefox, but there are some:

I think that the same methods for creating extensions apply to both Firefox and thunderbird:

What I think is needed is integration. Outlook is far from ideal but it does allow for the partial tracking of contacts. Type a letter and send it by email and you can have it in the journal. I suppose that its actually a contact manager module that's needed rather than an email client. Office suites are there to enable the production of documents. These are normally stored or sent on to someone else. To keep on top of what's gone where it would be nice to have a contact manager/control module that linked the whole thing together, ACT doesn't work with OOo so that cannot be used and none of the email clients offer that level of integration. Outlook has it to a limited degree but it does have it and it can be a bonus if used well.

SO the question is could something be tied into OOo that linked documents with contacts and track all communications in and out..

Just a question
