Also, I tried using =sum(first-cell-in-range:last-cell-in-range) [I believe it was e3:e33 or somesuch] and that would only return a syntax error without indicating where the error was. Again, MS Word had no problems using exactly the same syntax.
mmmm ... just tried something like =sum<e3:e33> in a writer table and it works like a charm.
