I solved this, inadvertently, by changing the default language from
LC_LANG=posix (the Gentoo default) to UTF-8. (Private email from another
user showed that this worked for him as well and reminded me to write
with my solution.) Why this was not an issue in OO < 2.0 is still a
mystery to me.
