I notice that the 're-format and re-install' mantra is being trotted out

As far as I know, there is no way to do an automatic re-install of
non-MS software with Windows. A lot of configurations get lost, too, if
I understand correctly. Nothing like kickstart is available for Windows.
If this practice increases it could be a way to grind of a percent or
two of OOo's market share, especially for those that have both MSO and
OOo. With all the time consumed by the restoration process, shortcuts or
time constraints will mean that third party apps and many extras get
left off.
I wonder how much the recommendation is intended to affect the
competition rather than function as a work around for egregious
security. Can we get McNeally to address this as it affects StarOffice
equally, instead of bleating about the GPL?

Patents are wrong for software but right for inventions. Write:
I can see a benefit to OOo here.
Those users that take their computer into their local shop to be fixed
may find that they have lost all their "borrowed" software as well as
their files. Now they have to go out and "borrow" the disk again. Now
is a time to get OOo into the hands of the local service shops. A value
added service to their customers by installing an office suite.
As for the security aspect.
When I read stories about new rootkit virus that are kernel based, I
wonder how well these can be cleaned. Look at the headaches with the
Sony Rootkit. One of the proof of concepts that I read about this
morning would be allot worse than that.
